Pella, Iowa, isn't just a picturesque town with windmills and tulips; it's a culinary delight! With its strong Dutch heritage, you'll find an array of unique and delicious treats, alongside a thriving local food scene. Let's embark on a foodie adventure through Pella!
Dutch Delights: Sweet and Savory
No trip to Pella is complete without indulging in some traditional Dutch pastries! Here are a few local favorites sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and found at our local bakeries, Jaarsma Bakery and Vander Ploeg Bakery:
Dutch Letters: These flaky “S” shaped pastries are filled with delicious almond paste and topped with sugar.. yum!
Speculaas: This cookie is a spiced shortcrust cookie traditionally made as a holiday cookie and is often compared to gingerbread.
Stroopwafels: A thin, round cookie made from two layers of sweet baked dough held tougher with a syrup filling. They are traditionally paired with hot coffee laying the stroopwafel on top warming up the filling for a delicious coffee time treat!
Poffertjes: The perfect dessert or sweet treat, poffertjes are like fluffy mini-pancakes often coated in butter and powdered sugar. Clover Leaf on Franklin has many additional topping options including strawberries, bacon, maple syrup, and Nutella!
Pella is also known for its savory options as well! See some of our favorites below that can be found at our local meat markets, In’t Veld’s Meat Market and Ulrich’s Meat Market.
Pella Bologna: Made with carefully chosen spices, beef, and then smoked, it is not your traditional store-bought bologna. You can use it for a charcuterie tray, on a sandwich or salad, or eat it right out of the package!
Gouda Cheese: Pairing nicely with Pella bologna, Gouda cheese is a creamy semi-hard yellow cheese originating from the Netherlands. Experience the cheese-making process firsthand by visiting Frisian Farms Cheese House!
Dutch Spiced Beef: Used in a variety of dished around Pella, this beef is slow cooked in spices and then thinly sliced creating the perfect addition to any meal!
Koffietijd: Wake Up in Pella
Pella’s coffee scene is a vibrant mix of local roasters and cozy cafes, each offering unique and delicious flavors. Whether you’re a fan of classic espresso drinks of adventurous specialty coffees, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings.
The Brew Coffee House is a popular spot for its expertly crafted lattes and friendly atmosphere. Iris Coffee Co is known for its creative drink combos, featuring unique flavors and handmade syrups. For the kiddos their STEM area is a great place to let your imagination run wild!

Enjoy a cup of joe while browsing the shelves or simply soaking up the peaceful ambiance.
